Campus Style

This week, I asked Loggers what inspires them to dress the way that they do. Some were influenced by pop culture and media, while others were inspired by mixing and matching clothes that they already owned. This melting pot of style adds a little bit of zest to the look and feel of our student body.   Photos Courtesy/Kasey Janousek       "Minimalism and comfort" Ken Aviananda   "Hot substitute teacher" Taylor Applegate     "Hobo chic" Beth Onaga     "My grandpa's cool and funky sweaters" Ian Latimer...

Will Your Favorite Show Return?

College: The classes, the friends, the knowledge, the socializing, the TV shows…. Yes that’s right, let’s all be honest; most of us are adding on one more major: procrastination with an emphasis on television. This time of year, there are two important drafts happening: the NFL drafts (#GoHawks) and Network Renewals. I will be going over many of the major shows on television and outlining what networks have rumored their fate to be. Let’s start with ABC programming.  ABC has renewed “How to Get Away with Murder.” Good news for...

Humidity and Static: Anything But Static

At almost any given moment during the day, you can hear violins and singing voices coming from the music building, KUPS playing in The Cellar or the occasional tune blasting out of an open dorm-room window. Outside those department or dorm-room settings, however, Puget Sound plays host to its fair share of musical guests including bands such as Humidity and Static. Humidity and Static started as a personal music project after senior Evan Boucher had the idea of making a Soundcloud account in 10th grade. “Band,” however, may yet...

Getting The Most for your Dining Bucks

One of the more exciting perks of having an on-campus student job with Dining and Conference Services is the ability to spend staff points each day you work, depending on how many hours are clocked in that day. In general, most students receive either two or four dining dollars per shift worked (as long as their shifts exceed two hours in a given day). For many off-campus students without a meal plan, this perk could mean a free meal, while those with meal plans have more wiggle room to splurge...

Student Artists Pursue Art Abroad

This summer, artists Haley Andres, Abbie Baldwin and Kristan Schuford were awarded grants that allowed them to pursue their craft while living abroad in Germany for three months.  A fourth student, Luc Sokolsky, spent the time in Budapest, learning the trade of art curation. With the exception of Andres, the students gave a presentation sharing their experiences over the last six months as part of an opening reception of an exhibit in Kittredge Gallery which featured the three artists’ work, and was curated by Sokolsky. The three artists described the...

Urban X Change Reshapes Tacoma Fashion

Thrift-store culture has been booming in the Pacific Northwest for the past decade, and it has only been picking up speed. With the immense popularity of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s song “Thrift Shop,” secondhand clothing has had a rebirth that our generation has swallowed whole. The legacy of Kurt Cobain’s grunge style has been reworked and repopularized by style icons like Rihanna, Cara Delevingne, Jared Leto and the Olsen Twins. People are searching thrift stores high and low to find unique garments that aren’t coming out of cookie-cutter patterns created...

“Celebrating Puget Sound Theater”: Continuing Exhibits

It’s difficult to miss those detailed exhibits that are periodically changed in the library. The current exhibit, which has been up since February 8, is entitled “Celebrating Puget Sound Theatre.”  As the name suggests, this particular exhibit presents a glimpse into the process of and effort that goes into performance and production at the University of Puget Sound. On display are items from campus productions such as 1620 Bank Street and Kiss Me Kate. According to Theatre Liaison Librarian Lori Ricigliano, with showcases displaying everything from playbills and production...

Death Grips

Editors note: The following article is the unabridged version of an article that ran in print on February 20, 2015 entitled "Death Grips."   "Death Grips was and always has been a conceptual art exhibit above and beyond a band." Thus read the soon-to-be-legendary 'breakup napkin' of Sacramento-based music group Death Grips last summer. The note was met with considerable backlash, but this kind of reaction was nothing new to the group, which comprised of drummer Zach Hill, vocalist Stefan Burnett as "(MC) Ride," and producer Andy Morin, known during this...

Dean Benitez: The Exploitation of Hip Hop

Our own Michael Benitez, Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at Puget Sound, recently contributed to a book about music and youth counter-culture called Rebel Music: Resistance through Hip Hop and Punk.  Benitez uses “Hip Hop is Dead” as a muse and writes with passion and intelligence about his hopes and fears for the future of hip hop. Benitez explains that ever since record producers figured out that the genre had enormous potential to rake in cash, they have tried to take hip hop out of the hands of the community...

Gluten- and dairy-free coconut dream bars

Considering the prevalence of food allergies, more and more people are demanding quality sweets that are also allergen-friendly.  As it should be! You deserve quality treats even if you can’t digest some of the common ingredients in sweets. This recipe for Coconut Dream Bars is perfect for people who are gluten- and/or dairy-sensitive. What makes the recipe work is the balance between the topping and the crust.  Since the topping is so sweet, the amount of brown sugar is reduced in the shortbread crust. Making the crust thicker and adding...

Darkroom Collective: Photography inspired T-Shirts

Couldn’t necessarily describe the University of Puget Sound campus as “fashion-oriented.” However, beneath the surface, Puget Sound senior Nathaniel Skinner is using his artistic talent to create a collection of T-shirts that has the potential to redefine fashion. “I had an inherent love affair with clothing,” Skinner said. “My mom is involved in fashion and she taught me the importance of dressing well as a form of personal expression.” Along with childhood friend, Kahlil Dumas, who attends the University of Portland, Skinner launched Darkroom Collective, a collection of cyanotype inspired...
