Artist Spotlight: Gaby Yoque

For Puget Sound junior Gaby Yoque, the arts are not merely an event; they are a passion. With a double major in studio art and computer science, Yoque hopes to pursue a career in graphic design. “Truth be told, I wasn’t even sure I was going to major in studio art because I thought my parents would be opposed to it the stigma,” Yoque said. “When I had to declare my major, I threw caution to the wind and decided that I was going to spend my college days...

Humidity and Static: Anything But Static

At almost any given moment during the day, you can hear violins and singing voices coming from the music building, KUPS playing in The Cellar or the occasional tune blasting out of an open dorm-room window. Outside those department or dorm-room settings, however, Puget Sound plays host to its fair share of musical guests including bands such as Humidity and Static. Humidity and Static started as a personal music project after senior Evan Boucher had the idea of making a Soundcloud account in 10th grade. “Band,” however, may yet...

“Celebrating Puget Sound Theater”: Continuing Exhibits

It’s difficult to miss those detailed exhibits that are periodically changed in the library. The current exhibit, which has been up since February 8, is entitled “Celebrating Puget Sound Theatre.”  As the name suggests, this particular exhibit presents a glimpse into the process of and effort that goes into performance and production at the University of Puget Sound. On display are items from campus productions such as 1620 Bank Street and Kiss Me Kate. According to Theatre Liaison Librarian Lori Ricigliano, with showcases displaying everything from playbills and production...

Baroque Performance Captivates Audience

Not every performance can boast being a part of a series that has existed for 30 years. This past Friday’s event, An Evening of Baroque Music, however, is one of those performances. An Evening of Baroque Music, which was performed on Feb. 6, continued the long-standing Jacobsen Series. First established in 1984, the series is named for Professor Leonard Jacobsen, Professor of piano and Chair of the Piano Department at the University of Puget Sound from 1935 to 1965. The Jacobsen series consists of concerts on a theme throughout the...

The Man Behind The Theory of Everything

Even if you don’t know much about him, you’ve heard of him. This theoretical physicist and cosmologist is arguably the most important figure in natural science since Albert Einstein. I’m talking, of course, about Stephen Hawking. Hawking is largely known for setting forth complex theories regarding the origins of the universe and the radiation emitted by black holes. He was the first to suggest a cosmology that can be explained by a union of quantum mechanics and Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Diagnosed with motor neuron disease at the age...

My Brightest Diamond blends styles in new album

If there really is a genuinely original way to get people to take notice of your forthcoming album, incorporating a full marching band into the headline single might just be it. Shara Worden, under the alias of her opera-pop music project My Brightest Diamond, did just that. September saw the release of My Brightest Diamond’s newest album, This Is My Hand, a clatteringly powerful and sweeping tour de force. And it just so happens that the lead single “Pressure” begins with a catalyzing drumline against which Worden’s spiraling vocals...

Chadwick Stokes teases The Horse Comanche with song release

Chadwick Stokes isn’t your everyday musician. He’s the kind of musician who hops freight trains across the United States, who fronts two different bands, and who opens for a protest concert with Rage Against the Machine just down the street from a major national political convention.     There are a lot of musicians out there. But there are musicians, and then there is Chadwick Stokes. The frontman of two bands, Dispatch and State Radio, Stokes and his remarkable career prove that he isn’t just a run-of-the-mill musician. He’s...

Doom and Gloom Spooks, Delights Campus Yet Again

University of Puget Sound’s musically-oriented organization Curtain Call presented its musical theater review on Oct. 30 to an enthusiastic full house. While the month of October no doubt screams Halloween and candy to most people, this semester it screamed “doom and gloom” for the cast of Curtain Call. More specifically, it screamed Doom and Gloom: A Fall Musical Theater Review. Featuring numbers from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Into the Woods, The Addams Family Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Les Miserables, Assassins, Shrek the Musical, Across the Universe, Next to Normal,...

Tennessee band Apache Relay brings Americana to Washington

If you haven’t already heard, Tennessee has a new queen, and her name is Katie. At least, that’s what The Apache Relay sings in the title song off their newest album Katie Queen of Tennessee, which debuted April 22 of this year. And that’s only one of the great songs they’ll perform during their upcoming tour. Katie opens with a solo violin, which leads into a fusion of pop, rock, and indie rock elements. It is a layered song that both complements and defies the band’s original folk and...
