While sexual assault, misconduct, and harassment have always been a part of the conversations on college campuses (sometimes in good ways and sometimes not), this year there has been a venerable explosion of coverage around the nation on this topic. Not to be left out of the conversation, Puget Sound students have taken up the call and have been asking, demanding, and shining the spotlight on these issues and what the campus has been doing or not doing. The culmination of these conversations were the Speak Up! forums. These talks...
Edward Jones believes that every single person in the world should meditate. His reason to believe this is simple; it has helped him change his entire perspective. Life as a college student can be extremely stressful. Many students have heard of the practice of meditation, but few have actually participated in it. I spoke with Ven. Jo Jo, a monk who teaches a meditation class on campus every Tuesday evening about his advice for college students. He answered with one word: meditation. “Stop and breathe and relax,” Jo Jo said,...
When we think about investing, we imagine the New York Stock Exchange, a whirlwind of people shouting about points, a scene out of the movie Trading Places with Eddie Murphy. Most students think of investing as something that they will do much later in their lives. Perhaps some students don’t think about investing at all. However, investing is a great way to save up for the future. First and foremost what is investing? And, for those particularly interested in exploring and contributing to food justice, there are opportunities right here on campus to participate. Emelie Peine, Assistant Professor of IPE, lead an engaging...
On Nov. 6, students had the opportunity to not only familiarize themselves with the policy and procedure regarding harassment and sexual misconduct, but to give constructive feed back to what they saw as issues on the topic as well. Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean Students Mike Segawa reminded attendees that though he was proud of where our campus was on this topic, he also strongly believed that that we needed change. The meeting began with a welcome from some key figures on campus that represent students and faculty...
One of the newest trends on campus seems to be completing the 30-day challenge at Expand Yoga. The challenge is simple: the participant pays for an unlimited month of yoga. It’s $100 for community members; however, students receive a discount of 50 percent, lowering the cost to only $50. That’s not the real challenge though. The real challenge is attending class every day for 30 days. If the challenger is able to do this, they get their next month of yoga free. According to the staff, the challenge changes lives....
