A sophisticated bar

As you step in the door of 1022 South you are immediately transported out of Tacoma and into a trendy Manhattan-style bar. The room is illuminated by dim overhead lamps that spill over light from the bar itself. A large chalkboard displays happy hour drinks for the evening in a fine cursive script. For those of you unfamiliar with this hidden treasure, 1022 South is a bar that belongs in a category all its own. Dana Zillgit, one of my dining companions, described the bar as a “classy hole in...

Death Cab for Cutie’s first arena show a grand success

Death Cab for Cutie and the Head and the Heart began their first arena show Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Key Arena in Seattle. That evening, the stage became an enlarged playground for both bands. Each song had a force of excitement and fun powering it, while the band members danced around stage, playing in their element. The Head and the Heart opened the show with their familiar, powerful and folky tones. They related to the crowd, revealing that some of the members had grown up in Seattle....

Sex and the Sound

Hellloooo, Tacoma! Make some nooooise!!!! If you’ve ever spent a Saturday night in a dorm, you probably know that making beautiful music together is a popular late-night activity. Well, turn down the disdain and turn up the iPod, because this little sex columnist is begging for more! Noise is a beautiful thing—any successful porno will tell you that. McGowan will be joined by Kevin Pollack, of The Usual Suspects fame, Taryn Manning of  Hustle and Flow and Sean Astin, the inimitable Samwise Gamgee, in the role of...

Inheritance wraps up

Following the wake of an enormous, international success with his first book, Eragon, fantasy author Christopher Paolini has struggled to maintain the hype for the remaining three books of his series. Having written the first draft of Eragon at the tender age of 15, Paolini’s genius seems irreproachable, although many fans had already abandoned the series by the time his second book, Eldest, was released in 2005. As for the series’ third installment released in 2008, Brisingr, I had abstained from reading it after a friend told me that he...

Scary movie marathon must-haves

It’s that time of year again! Crunchy piles of leaves speckle the ground, jack-o-lanterns leer menacingly out of windows, and college students everywhere are gorging themselves on candy corn. Then there’s the absolute best part of October: Halloween. An excuse to feast on sugar and dress like a prostitute, Halloweekend is a celebration anticipated by Puget Sound students like none other. But aside from consuming mountains of Skittles and spilling jungle juice down your “slutty nun” costume, what else is there to do? The answer, my friends, is to cast...
