Kinky Film Series in Review: Wetlands

Wetlands (2013), originally premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2013 and then went on to the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. If you’ve heard of the film, it’s either because you recognize the Charlotte Roche novel on which it is based, Feuchtgebiete, or you are like me and have heard of it because of its extremely bawdy, incredibly explicit and potentially nausea-inducing content. Columnist Rebecca Schuman of Slate magazine described the film as Germany’s “Fifty Shades of Gross.” The film, directed by David Wnendt, follows the story of Helen...

Kinky Film Series in Review: Secretary, an alternative to Fifty Shades

“Who’s to say that love needs to be soft and gentle?” Truer words were never spoken. This is just one of the memorable quotes from our kinky film of the week. This week we will take a look at the sado-masochistic office romance portrayed in the 2002 film Secretary, adapted from the short story in Mary Gaitskill’s 1988 book Bad Behavior. The film, directed by Steven Shainberg, follows Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a young woman who comes from a neurotic family and suffers from an illness of self-mutilation, and Mr....

Kinky Film Series in Review: Histoire d’O

After the release of the highly anticipated film 50 Shades of Grey, we here at the Happy Trail want to recognize other films that have pushed kinky boundaries in the theater. For the next four weeks, I will be dedicating my articles to reviews of groundbreaking movies that are known for their portrayals of kinky delights. Sorry Christian and Anastasia, your antics won’t be included in this series. This week’s movie will give tribute to the French book-turned-film Histoire d’O (or Story of O). In the 1975 adaptation of Pauline...

PUBIC HAIR: NEW TREND OR PASSING FAD?

So, is the bush back en vogue? Whether it’s style, statement or just pure laziness, it would seem that the beaver got its fur back. In 2000, when the episode of “Sex and the City” entitled “Sex and Another City” aired where Carrie Bradshaw got her first below-the-belt wax from the Russian esthetician, a trend was sparked: the bald vajayjay. Women began spending upwards of 60 dollars on Brazilian waxes to clear their landing strips. There is even an option for men, the Manzilian. The hairless mons also inspired other...

G-spot may or may not exist, study finds

“O G-spot, G-spot, where art thou, G-spot?” Everyone is in search to find the G-spot. Although there are countless books, articles, videos and gadgets aimed at helping people find the G-spot, there is still debate as to whether or not it actually exists. While some people claim that they have found this  magic pleasure spot, others are unsure. The G-spot, named after the German gynecologist Ernst Gräfenberg, is located only a few inches in on the upper wall of the vagina. Some describe this mysterious erogenous spot to have the...

Dirty talk sparks debate on respect in the bedroom

Usually silence is golden, although not always in the bedroom. Some people think that they need to buy a new product in order to make their sex life exciting, but there is often an easy fix: dirty talk. Dirty talk does not have to be an art form, it can range from using a few explicit words and phrases in the bedroom to playing out an entire fantasy. Of course, if you want to start talking dirty, it’s important to chat with your partner beforehand so you’re both aware of...

College perfect time to experiment with fetishes and kinks

College, as we know, is a time for experimenting (and not just in Biology lab). We make a lot of discoveries about ourselves during our college years. Through this experimentation we are able to figure out our own likes and dislikes on a range of topics, including our sexual desires and kinks. Understanding sexual preferences is hard, and accepting them is even harder. Unfortunately, fetishes and kinks are highly stigmatized in our culture. To be clear, according to the Kinsey Institute at the University of Indiana, a fetish is “a...

Male contraceptive options expanding

Contraceptives come in all shapes and sizes, but they have one thing in common; women’s bodies are their targets. Women have been bombarded with birth control options ever since the Food and Drug Administration approved the first oral contraceptive in 1960. According to Planned Parenthood’s website, the only male-oriented birth control options available are “abstinence, condoms, outercourse, vasectomy withdrawal.” However, this could all be subject to change as a new method of birth control will hopefully be added to the list of available possibilities. Vasalgel, a product developed by Parsemus...
