Beyond Baker Stadium, the world of college football is coming to a close as the end of the season is fast approaching. As of week 14, the teams standing in the number one and number two positions are at conflict. According to the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings, Auburn has eclipsed the highly favored Oregon Ducks by a margin of .0002. However, the Ducks are still No. 1 in the Harris Polls as well as the Coaches Poll. In five of six computer polls, Oregon ranks No. 2. Auburn, therefore...
University of Puget Sound’s cross country team had an average season. They consistently placed in the middle of most of their meets and they weren’t able to meet their goal of finishing in the top half of the conference. According to coach Mike Orechia, the reason the team had an average season is because “the men’s team was very young. They made tremendous progress and we are excited about the future. The women suffered from sickness at the wrong time of the year.” Despite these unfortunate set-backs there were some...
Freshman Robin Harkins has been a strong asset to the Puget Sound cross country team this season. He not only led the men’s team in every meet this fall, but went the extra mile and qualified for the NCAA championships. “I had a great season in cross country this year. With the help of all the coaches I feel like I am running much better than I did in high school and I am learning a lot of new things about running. I have an amazing group of coaches that...
The University of Puget Sound’s swimming teams have looked unbeatable in the early stages of the season. Most recently, both men’s and women’s teams took titles at the Northwest Invitational on Nov. 20 and 21 at Parkland. The women Loggers crushed the competition with a total of 528 points, finishing well ahead of Whitman University, who came in a distant second with 405 points. The men faced a more challenging field; they narrowly held off Whitman 472-463 for the team title. The men’s team took an early lead thanks in...
Are you aware that the University of Puget Sound has a good old fashioned club rugby team? I wasn’t either, until I passed Todd Field a couple weekends ago to see just over 20 Logger men in the pouring rain, yelling, kicking and screaming during a game. Battered, bloodied and tired, the Puget Sound club team, filled mostly with “retired” soccer and football players, won in the closing on a try. Now you might ask what a try is? In rugby, a player must ground the ball with downward pressure...
The Loggers came out strong again in their second week back after an impactful 2009 season. If their performances are indicative of what is to come this season, the Loggers are well on their way to qualifying for Nationals. The true test for the Logger swimmers will be maintaining high work ethic and building confidence, not cockiness, in preparation for higher-stakes competition later in the season. The Logger swim teams cleaned house this weekend against the Willamette Bearcats on Friday and the Linfield Wildcats on Saturday. On Friday, final team...
It was a classic battle of David versus Goliath. On Nov. 13, 2010, Manny “The PacMan” Pacquiao faced Antonio Margarito in the Cowboys Stadium for the WBC super welterweight belt. Margarito’s physical advantage was apparent as the boxers posed for the traditional pre-fight stare-down. Towering an extra 5 inches over Pacquiao and weighing in at 150 lbs, almost 6 lbs more than the PacMan, Margarito was characteristically cocky. The PacMan looked calm and collected despite his apparent physical disadvantages. He had confidence in his speed, ambidexterity and stamina. In a pre-fight...
