Swim teams look impressive at Northwest Invitational

The University of Puget Sound’s swimming teams have looked unbeatable in the early stages of the season. Most recently, both men’s and women’s teams took titles at the Northwest Invitational on Nov. 20 and 21 at Parkland. The women Loggers crushed the competition with a total of 528 points, finishing well ahead of Whitman University, who came in a distant second with 405 points. The men faced a more challenging field; they narrowly held off Whitman 472-463 for the team title. The men’s team took an early lead thanks in...

Rugby club finding success, making a name for itself across campus

Are you aware that the University of Puget Sound has a good old fashioned club rugby team? I wasn’t either, until I passed Todd Field a couple weekends ago to see just over 20 Logger men in the pouring rain, yelling, kicking and screaming during a game. Battered, bloodied and tired, the Puget Sound club team, filled mostly with “retired” soccer and football players, won in the closing on a try. Now you might ask what a try is? In rugby, a player must ground the ball with downward pressure...

Giants bring home World Series title

Puget Sound football Coach Jeff Thomas’ prediction of the Giants winning the World Series came to fruition. Last week, the San Francisco Giants defeated the Texas Rangers to win their first World Series since 1954. And although there seemed to be a large Giants bandwagon fan population around the Puget Sound campus, it was refreshing to see the improbable become a reality. Two supposed underdogs:,the Giants and Rangers were able to defeat two evil empires: the Phillies and Yankees. At the start of the season, the Giants and Rangers were...

Men’s soccer splits over Halloween weekend, chances for a playoff birth now all but gone

Over the weekend the University of Puget Sound men’s soccer team headed down to Oregon to face the George Fox Bruins and the Pacific Boxers on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29 and 30.  The result was typical of the season thus far as the Loggers recorded a 2-0 win over the Bruins but fell 1-0 to the Boxers. On Saturday, the Logger defense stood strong as the team recorded its ninth shutout of the season behind four saves from sophomore goalie Chris McDonald (Newton, Mass.). The Bruins outshot the Loggers...

Fall season comes to a close for Logger golf

en’s golf team finished out the season on a high note, winning the team title for the Northwest Conference Fall Classic on Sunday. With a team score of 320, the Loggers led the rest of the field by 10 strokes at the end of day one. Day two was no different, as the Loggers posted a team score of 312, netting a two-day team total of 632. The next closest team was the Pacific Boxers, who shot a two-day 639. Fighting through the rain and harsh conditions, the Logger men’s...

Men’s Soccer earns draw with top ranked Pacific University Boxers

Men’s soccer team faced off against the Northwest Conference leading Pacific Boxers. After a battle that lasted through regulation and two overtime periods, the two teams reached a scoreless draw. This proved that the men’s Logger team is capable of matching up competitively with just about any other team in its conference. The Boxers did manage to take 18 shots opposed to the mere 3 of the Loggers; however, the defense continued to shine. And as it is the case with just about every sport, establishing a fundamentally sound defensive...

Getting to know Jeff Thomas: New Head Coach talks football, movies, Lady GaGa and much, much mor

Some would say the day Coach Jeff Thomas was born, the earth went back in time a full second. And although during my interview with Coach Thomas he neither confirmed nor denied this statement, I was able to learn a little bit more about Puget Sound’s new head football coach. David Thirlby- Previously you played and coached for University of Redlands down in California, what would you say is the biggest difference between Redlands and UPS from a football standpoint? Coach Thomas- We are not yet executing at a championship...

Feature Athlete: Jackie Harvey

The Logger volleyball team took to the road over the previous weekend, winning matches against both the Linfield Wildcats and Willamette Bearcats in consecutive days. The team is improving, but perhaps even more noticeable has been the emergence of freshmen outside hitter Jackie Harvey (Santa Barbara, CA). In the first game against Linfield, Harvey led the team in kills with 12 while hitting an impressive .356 on the court. She also contributed defensively with 7 digs. The following day against Willamette, Harvey added 6 kills along with 6 more digs....

Volleyball looking to establish consistency

Entering Saturday night’s game at 5-3, the Puget Sound volleyball team looked focused and confident to play in front of the Logger faithful for the first time this season. Even without fan favorite junior Bri Boyce (Kent, Wash.), it was evident that the Loggers were not going to be denied a victory by the Whitman Missionaries. The two teams met earlier in the season, resulting in a frustrating loss for the Loggers when the Missionaries took them to a fifth game before winning 3-2. Friday night was a different story....
