New film Pain and Gain earns its name

Pain and Gain, directed by Michael Bay and starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Mark Wahlberg, is a screwball comedy released April 25. In the understatement of the year, this movie is not for the faint of heart. Given that this may be the only film to look at the underbelly of bodybuilding in South Florida in the 1990s this year, this is simultaneously my favorite and least favorite film on the subject from 2013. This is a film that is difficult to review succinctly, partially because it bounces all...

Band Brass Bed brings both heavy and vulnerable sounds

Four-man rock group Brass Bed released their third full-length album on April 23, further establishing their well-deserved place on the indie rock scene. “A louder version of the Beatles” is how the band describes itself, playing around with pseudo-psychedelic rock themes but keeping it accessible enough for more conservative listeners. Their recent release, The Secret Will Keep You, sings of growing up. However, instead of your standard angst-filled productions that result from memories of adolescence, the men sing poignantly on their themes and convey their experiences in a very cool,...

Overlooking the Sound: DJ Mike Villa’s “The Funk”

This week: “The Funk” with DJ Mike Villa, Thursdays from 2-3 p.m. In a word, the music chosen during this hour is “colorful.” Perhaps it was the sunny day, but even when dreary, “The Funk” will add some pizzazz. On an absolutely gorgeous Thursday afternoon, just when it was heating up for real, the airwaves started getting a little funky. The song choice during this show matched perfectly with the mood of the day: festive, cool and downright joyful all at the same time. DJ Mike Villa brings back dancing...

Basic recipe for red Thai chicken curry

This week we’re talking Thai curries. I make Thai curry much the same way I make yellow curry: coconut milk, veggies, curry paste/powder and sometimes chicken or tofu. It mostly depends on the curry flavor I want. For Thai curry, you have the option of either red curry paste or green curry paste. I don’t know much about the history of curry, but my guess is that there are certain ingredients that are associated with each paste, but I just use them based on what I think tastes good. You...

“Overlooking the Sound” reviews KUPS as a whole

In response to a Hey You! saying that KUPS is not accessible—meaning too avant-garde to even listen to—this week’s review is a little different. Instead of focusing on one show that has been recommended to me by listeners and visiting the station while it airs, this week’s review focuses on a few different shows from the perspective of someone who randomly tunes into the radio. Is it possible that the Hey You! is right? The remainder of this column will discuss sort of a mood match, how well the music...

Unique pizza recipes

Pizza is the perfect food. I’ve had this conversation so many times I’ve lost count. Every time the topic of pizza comes up my roommate and I have at least a five-minute conversation about how it is perfect. It fits in your hand comfortably, it can be eaten warm or cold—depending on the weather—and it can contain all of the food groups if you want it to. As good as Cellar pizza is, it can get a bit spendy to eat there every time pizza sounds good, which for me...
