Overlooking The Sound: “UT Radio”

This Week: Ubiquitous They Radio with Jeff, Robin and Friends Sunday at 5 p.m. Head honchos Jeff and Robin bring you a show unlike any other on KUPS. Shows like theirs (although there really are none like theirs) make the station proud to be diverse. Ubiquitous They Radio is a talk show, a comedic improvisation show, and an old-fashioned radio drama. UT started in the 1980s as a radio show. The current show is a tribute to the past and a plea for the future of UT to also involve...

Overlooking The Sound: KUPS’s “The Blues With Lillian”

This Week: The Blues with Lillian Thursday at 8 a.m. Lillian still uses CDs as opposed to scratch records or ScratchLive, a computer program. That is the only real negative element to be said about “The Blues.” She simply has not received the memo that electronically playing your songs over the airwaves, or at least spinning records, boosts up your cool factor. Lucky for Lillian’s listeners, you cannot tell from listening that she still plays old-school, un-cool Compact Discs. Lillian’s show is a hit-after-hit hour of songs that blend together...

Christmas comes early at Tacoma holiday fest

If you’re anything like me, you know that the day after Thanksgiving is far too late to begin ushering in the Christmas season. The appropriate time is the third week of October, which is when the Tacoma Holiday Food and Gift Festival takes place at the Tacoma Dome. This year’s show was the 30th anniversary and spanned the days between Oct. 17 and 21. The atmosphere of the Holiday Food and Gift...

Diverse lineup for Campus Films Approaches

The Amazing Spiderman There are plenty of reasons why The Amazing Spiderman is a good movie: The give and take between Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield is playful and entertaining, Martin Sheen is funny and the comic book roots shine through in all the right ways. Even the camera work is interesting and tries to avoid the cliché motion-sickness-inducing swinging that comes with a Spiderman movie. The bottom line, though, why this movie is one of the top 10 superhero movies, is that it does not feature Toby Maguire, Kirsten...

Overlooking The Sound: a review of “Working Nights”

This week: “Working Nights” with Donny Vegas, Wed. at 7:00 p.m. Disco music is a little distracting to be ideal study music, but whatever Donny Vegas pulls out on his disco show just might be okay for it. Wide bellbottom pants, velour jumpsuits and huge Afros define disco. The DJ of this show does not wear any of those things, and he goes on to challenge the definition of disco music as well. Imagine yourself on a Wednesday evening in the library, a snack next to you. You scroll through...
