“All will come again into its strength: the fields undivided, the water undammed, the trees towering and the walls built low. And in the valleys, people as strong and as varied as the land.” —Rilke   This is the motto of Make Way For Monarchs, a ‘Milkweed-Monarch Recovery Alliance,’ which is co-facilitated by Dr. Gary Paul Nabhan. Last Wednesday, Oct. 8, Nabhan gave a talk titled “Milkweeds and Monarchs” for the Puget Sound community. He spoke about the declining population of pollinators and their importance to the health of...

Technology is amazing, but when does it stop enhancing life and start inhibiting it? Nowadays most students always have a smart phone, tablet or computer close at hand. Even though these items can serve a useful purpose in an academic atmosphere, more often than not they are used for methods of procrastination. “I think devices are awesome and I use a lot of technology myself, but the majority of the ways we use these devices hurt us in terms of concentration and focus,” Rachael Gary, Learning Support Services Coordinator at...

This is a column that aims to answer important questions college students may have regarding money, the job hunt and everything in between. As college students we are in a limbo between the “college world” and the “real world.”  It’s not a bad place to be—it gives us time to develop a solid financial base so that when we graduate we are ready to tackle our financial responsibilities. It’s a Friday afternoon and the hot, late summer sun is just beginning to set as Tacoma’s north end cools down. On the basement floor of McIntyre Hall, Corey Freidman is hard at work stacking concessions, making popcorn and setting up a ticket booth. Freidman, a sophomore, along with Edward Jones, senior and ASUPS Student Programmer, make up a working team of an up-and-coming institution here on campus. ASUPS campus films provide an inexpensive way for Puget Sound students and Tacoma community members to access recent and modern films. Freidman...

Everyday we interact with various staff members, from janitors to professors, who are crucial to the smooth running of our school, yet very rarely do we stop to get to know them. In this monthly column, I’ll be doing just that. Why? Because from our first day on campus, we have been deluged with the promise that the University of Puget Sound is an all-accepting, all-inclusive community. While this is true in many ways, it seems only to apply to the students, but we are not the only ones here. ...

As technology becomes more prevalent and useful, teachers and students need to find ways to incorporate these new advances with traditional teaching methods. Teachers are finding themselves discouraging laptop use to take notes in class due to it impeding academic performance. However, students find that using a laptop to take notes is more convenient. “I prefer taking notes on the computer because I can type faster than I write and will correct spelling,” sophomore Eden Ehrmann said. As more communication is being conducted through computers, students are finding that writing...

What is the Business Leadership Program? How is it different from the School of Business and Leadership? Hopefully this article can clarify and answer what makes it such a unique program on campus. BLP is an honors program within the SBL that celebrated its first graduating class in 1988 of 16 students according to the Tamanawas, 1988 and has since then grown into a program of about 100. As the title suggests the BLP is about leadership. It focuses on the development of students into leaders, not only on campus,...
