A Night of Mad Jazz

On Feb. 3, Schneebeck Concert Hall opened its doors to welcome Grammy Award-winning violinist Mads Tolling to the stage. Along with Puget Sound’s Jazz Orchestra, Tolling treated a lucky audience to a night of jazz and rhythm. Anybody passing by the hall that night is sure to have heard the blare of trumpets, the low crooning of saxophones and the undeniably bittersweet tones of the expertly played violin. Both students and community members alike were bobbing their heads and tapping their toes to keep in time with the steady rhythms...

Tacoma Art Museum grows with Haub Family Collection

At times the connection between what we study in college and its real-world application can be hard to reconcile. This has certainly been the case at times for me as I enter my third year of studies at the University of Puget Sound. It’s important to point out that this isn’t the case for everyone and everyone’s college experience is undeniably unique. As a History major the real-world use for what I learn is different from someone who, for example, is studying business management. This past Saturday marked an...

The Black Keys Bring A Night Of Rock and Blues To Seattle

On Saturday, Nov. 1, Seattle’s Key Arena welcomed arguably what many consider to be the quintessential faces of the newly revived garage rock genre. The air crackled with electricity and the faint smell of cigarettes as Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys took to the stage and proceeded to blow away the crowd for nearly two hours straight. The band has been touring the U.S. since early September, promoting their new album, Turn Blue, which was released back in May 2014. Thankfully, the group knows its audience...

This year marked the ninth annual Tacoma Film Festival, and it’s safe to say it was met with the level of acclaim and merit such an event deserves. Over the course of one week, ticket holders...

English Department’s Coffeehouse Series presents Open Mic Night

This past Wednesday night, those passing by the piano lounge were treated to more than the idle sounds of a half dozen conversations and the aroma of warm coffee from Diversions. Those passersby were treated to song, poetry and more, as the first Open Mic Night of the semester made its debut to an impressive turnout, thanks in no small part to the sterling efforts of the English Department. Having started out a number of years back and reappearing in some incarnation or another, Open Mic Night was brought back...

Comedy troupe Ubiquitous They gives perennial laughs

Between midterms, finals, surprise essays and the ever-so-dreaded idea of 8 a.m. classes, it’s fair to say that college can be a stressful experience. When faced with the challenges of what amounts to a usual college week, it’s important for the students of the University of Puget Sound to have somewhere where they can forget their troubles and laugh for a while. Luckily, there’s a group on campus that can help with that. They’re called Ubiquitous They, and they’ve been making students laugh for nearly 15 years. Started originally as...
