Beginnings and endings for Logger athletics

The school year is at its end. With one week left, students are beginning to focus on finals and their soon-to-be freedom. For graduating seniors, the next week is bittersweet as they move on from college life and enter the real world. But for those returning, there is much to look forward to in the athletic department. Last fall, Logger fans witnessed some highs and lows. The women’s soccer team won their 11th consecutive Northwest Conference Championship, while the Logger football team another winless season. These facts are at odds...

Rowing team has successful meet

The Puget Sound rowing teams wrapped up a weekend on the water this past Sunday, April 28 at the WIRA Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The Loggers had an impressive showing and reestablished just why they are one of the top Division III crews on the West Coast. Both the women’s varsity and second varsity eights placed high enough in Saturday’s races to make it to Sunday’s final in the Division II/Division III/Club category. The varsity boat clocked in at 7:15.6 on Sunday, and although it was a tad slower than...

Men’s Lacrosse takes first win of season

The University of Puget Sound does not merely play host to varsity athletics. Its fields are also home to a variety of club teams such as rugby, men’s lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee and soccer. The athletes that make up these teams are just as talented and skilled in their sport as the varsity athletes on this campus, if not, dare it be said, better. However, these teams do not receive the same recognition as the varsity sports on campus. Varsity sports are given priority in terms of field time yet this...

Strong meet for crew

Over the past few weeks, the Logger rowing teams have been waking up at the crack of dawn to demonstrate their love and dedication to a sport that many find their passion for in college.  With both land and water practices, the crew teams live and breathe rowing while still finding the time to dedicate to their academics. Waking up before most students, the crew teams have developed a bond that continues on and off the water and they have proven to be a force to be reckoned with. “So...

Losing continues for softball vs Pacific and Lewis & Clark

After falling short during opening weekend, the Loggers were looking to hit a high note in their games against Lewis and Clark and Pacific Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24, respectively. Although the Puget Sound softball team had an offensive burst during the second game of the doubleheader against Lewis and Clark, the Loggers fell 13-1 and 17-9 to the Pioneers. The Pios (7-3, 2-0 NWC), as the Pioneers are affectionately known, took advantage of five Logger errors during the first game, thus scoring seven unearned runs. The Loggers...

Rough first weekend for men’s tennis team

The 2013 men’s tennis seasoned opened one week ago today and although the Loggers had home court advantage they unfortunately were unable to hold off the Pacific Boxers with an 8-1 loss. Junior John Stevens (Portland, Ore) scored the Loggers (0-1, 0-1 NWC) only point during the number-six singles match. Stevens left the court with a 6-3 7-5 win over Pacific’s Ty Tanaka.  Unfortunately, the Boxers came out on top in other matches to walk away with the win. However, that is not to say that the Loggers did not...

Rest of team solid at Husky Invitational

As the winter sports season begins to gain its momentum on the Puget Sound campus, we turn our attention away from the field and look indoors.  However, it is not only the court that we should be keeping a constant eye on, it is also the pool. Logger swimming is one of the strongest athletics programs on campus, racking up countless wins in the Northwest Conference as well as setting records left and right. Their season so far has been going strong, and this past weekend was no exception as...
