MLB season brings records and excitement

By Kevin White Back in February of 2017, the beginnings of the new Major League Baseball (MLB) season were only in the early stages of development. The Grapefruit league in Florida brought together the powerhouse teams of the east, including the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals. The Cactus League in Arizona brought the previous World Series contenders, the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, back together to play just three months after the Cubs historic season ended with a title. Back in February, little speculation was offered as...

PSO Fall Break trips bring excitement

By Gabi Marrese The semester is already half over and the fall weather is calling your name. The Puget Sound Outdoors program has planned trips to keep people active and help them unwind after midterms. Over fall break, there are four outdoor adventures that are open to students with or without experience. “Goat Rocks” is an overnight backpacking trip with no experience required. “My co-lead and I actually planned a different trip to Indian Heaven Wilderness, but the fires are so bad down there that it was canceled. Outdoor resources readily available for students

By Will Keyse As the sun’s golden rays begin to appear less and less often between the infamous Washington showers, Puget Sound students take to the great outdoors while it’s still relatively pleasant to do so. Rain notwithstanding, the campus and Tacoma are fantastic locations in which to get linked up with outdoor opportunities. The first stop for any of your outdoor needs is the home of Puget Sound Outdoors (PSO), the Expeditionary House, located at the corner of 16th Street and Alder Street. Dubbed “the Expy,” the house offers...

The President and sports

By Zachary Fletcher Gerald Ford played football at the University of Michigan. George H.W. Bush played first base at Yale. Richard Nixon once suggested a play to be run by the Washington Redskins. George W. Bush was part-owner of an MLB franchise, all according to USA Today. The presidency has a long relationship with participating in sports and attending sporting events, dating back to 1910 when President Taft threw out the first ceremonial first pitch at a professional baseball game. But with his recent speeches and events, President Trump seems...

Men’s soccer keeps on rolling to start the season

By Tayla MacPherson The Puget Sound men’s soccer team faced Whitman College (Washington) and Whitworth University (Washington) the weekend of Sept. 23. Whitworth University’s team has been Northwest Conference champions the last three years, making three appearances in the NCAA tournament. The Puget Sound men have not beat Whitworth since 2014, making this game against Whitworth extremely important. Although this game was vital for the Loggers, the Puget Sound men wanted to treat the game against Whitworth like any other conference match. Senior Nathan Otto (Portland, Oregon) describes the week...

Racial Inequality and the NFL

By Kevin White Last year, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem in order to bring attention to the Black Lives Matter movement. The story became national news, and fierce debate ensued. Now, a year later, Colin Kaepernick is a free agent and remains unsigned. Let’s start by establishing an important and hopefully obvious fact: Kaepernick does not have a job because of his protests. It is not an issue of talent. Colin Kaepernick is easily one of the 40 best quarterbacks in America (40 assumes...

The Trail’s NFL Preview: For the Love of God can Somebody Stop the Patriots from Repeating?

By Kevin White             The New England Patriots, defending Super Bowl champions, came into this season with a ton of hype. As in, 16-0, greatest team ever hype. Luckily, the Kansas City Chiefs stopped that storyline before it could really get going, defeating the Patriots in week 1. However, the Patriots remain the heavy favorite, with 4 to 1 odds to win it all. As we get the NFL season started, let’s look at the teams that could save us from another Super Bowl for the Patriots. Kansas City Chiefs:...
