Women’s soccer team gaining momentum

Saturday’s matchup against Whitman proved to be a defensive struggle, but thanks to Robin Vieira’s goal in the 55th minute, Puget Sound came out on top 1-0 on Peyton Field on Oct. 6. The Loggers improved to (4-2-2, 2-1-2 NWC) which moved them up to sixth place in conference after starting the season off slowly. Puget Sound had its opportunities to break the game open in the first half, totaling eight shots on goal compared to Whitman’s five.  However, the Missionaries’ keeper Emily Davis (Eagle River, Alaska) made two...

Lacrosse continues to animate the West Coast, A look into the University of Puget Sound’s women’s lacrosse team

Lacrosse season may be four months away but that has not kept the women off the turf. With 13 new recruits on the team, the Loggers are looking forward to a promising season and are hard at work in preparation. The 2014 season has a roster of 25 girls with more collective experience than the program has seen since head coach Liana Halstead has been with the program. Women’s lacrosse is coming off difficult seasons in the past few years, but the program has a strong history and players are...

A Major League legend calls it quits at age 43, Mariano Rivera ends his baseball career after 19 years of dominance

This week, the baseball world is in the midst of what might be the saddest exit in MLB history.  Arguably one of the most respected player in all of sports, Mariano Rivera, is playing his last games ever in the MLB. While it might sound dramatic to those on the outside, as a young baseball player myself, Rivera leaving the game is one of the most significant sporting events of our lifetime. Rivera has been dominating the game for 19 years. People will truly miss the role model he has...

Men’s soccer shining bright

The Loggers have had a bright start to the 2013 season with two wins in conference already, with a 3-2 win over Pacific University (Ore.) and a 4-0 win at George Fox University. Most recently, in a rainy affair on Sept. 28 the Loggers triumphed 4-1 over the Willamette Bearcats. The early game saw few decisive attempts by the Bearcats, though the Loggers largely maintained possession. The Bearcats began to show signs of life at the 10-minute mark, and nearly opened the scoring against the Loggers. However, their forward was...

The win is their first of the season and marks the highly anticipated end to a losing streak that has been ongoing since 2011. This was also the first road victory since a 2008 game against Pomona-Pitzer. The first quarter ended with Puget Sound tied with Whittier at 7-7, but by the end of the second quarter the Loggers pulled ahead and ended the first half at 21-7. The Loggers were...

Loggers recover from Tommy John surgery: Three Puget Sound athletes suffer baseball-specific injury

What is the surgery to have as a competitive baseball pitcher? The Tommy John surgery. A surgery so specific to a playing position has never been more common in baseball than it is today. The injury that occurs in many baseball pitchers is a tear in the elbow, which is caused by a rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). Ever since the first UCL surgery in 1974, when Dr. Frank Jobe operated on Dodgers’ pitcher Tommy John, the most effective and efficient method to fix this injury has been...
