Rocky beginning for men’s basketball

While most members of the Puget Sound community were partaking in a much needed break, Logger athletes were doing the farthest thing from resting. Rather, they remained on campus for practice and games as Logger athletics continues its drive for 125 wins for Puget Sound athletic programs this season. The men’s basketball season opened on Nov. 3 with their alumni game at the Memorial Fieldhouse and has been gaining in momentum as the season has continued. Logger basketball kicked off their official season with a 85-82 victory against New Hope...

A season of highs and lows for Fall athletics

Puget Sound students are counting down the days until break, and whether or not that break is Thanksgiving or the long-awaited winter break, they both represent the end the semester.  As the semester draws to a quick conclusion, we make our transition from fall to winter and transition into a new Logger sports season. The fall season ended in a series of highs and lows, with our women’s teams topping the charts. Women’s soccer won its 11th consecutive Northwest Conference championships, a crowning achievement and women’s volleyball fought their way...

Football wraps up winless season

Last Saturday, Nov. 10 marked the end of the Logger football season.  It was a day of ups and downs as the Loggers concluded the season with a 55-0 loss at Willamette and set yet another record all in one day. Senior Adam Kniffin (Salem, Ore.) concluded his record-breaking career on the team by becoming the first Logger to compile 1,000 receiving yards.  He caught 14 passes during the game for a total of 90 yards to finish the 2012 season with 1,002 yards on 77 catches. Kniffin successfully broke...

Soccer wins game, but loses out on tournament

Saturday, Nov. 3 was bittersweet for Puget Sound men’s soccer as the team said goodbye to four seniors during Senior Day at East Field.  However, they were given a stylish farewell in the form of a 2-0 win against Pacific Lutheran. The Loggers (12-3-5, 8-2-4 NWC) scored twice in the second half of the game and senior goalkeeper Chris McDonald (Newton, Mass.) saved two shots to preserve the shutout. The Pacific Lutheran Lutes’ (10-7-2, 9-4-1 NWC) and the Loggers’ performance were not hindered by the soggy pitch, and both teams...

Football loses sixth in a row to Whitworth

This past weekend proved to be costly for the Puget Sound Loggers as Whitworth forced six turnovers to hold onto a 70-11 win on Saturday Oct. 20 in Spokane, Wash.  The Loggers (0-6, 0-3 NWC) had five passes intercepted, including two that resulted in Whitworth touchdowns. According to Logger Athletics, the windy conditions in Spokane on Saturday resulted in a less-than-respectable Logger offense. The Loggers were never able to get an offensive groove resulting in a  poor passing game.  Whitworth used this to their advantage with a strong ground game...

Golf opens strongly

The Puget Sound men’s golf team performed strongly during the first tournament of the season at the Whitman Invitational on Sept. 29 and 30. The Loggers finished second in the tournament, held at the Wine Valley Golf Course. Sophomore Adam Bean (Portland, Ore.) was 2-under for the tournament, leading the Loggers to a strong finish during their first outing of the season. Between the first and second days of the tournament, Bean saw tremendous improvement. Bean was 3-under on the second day, finishing with a 142 (-2) for the tournament...

Volleyball suffers first loss

The Logger volleyball team has been playing strong this season, having held a record of 5-0 in conference play. However, as the Loggers took to the road this past weekend, it marked a time of highs and lows for Logger volleyball this fall. The Logger volleyball team suffered their first Northwest Conference loss of the season on Friday Sept. 28 in a five set match against Willamette. The Willamette Bearcats (3-9, 1-4 NWC) overcame a two sets to none deficit to upset the Logger winning streak to win their first...

Strong weekend for soccer, team runs winning streak to seven

Men’s soccer hit the road this past weekend with a winning streak of five games under their belts. Away from Baker Stadium, there was added pressure to continue with their excellent performance on the field. They did not disappoint. The Loggers ended their weekend with two more wins over Willamette and Linfield on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 respectively. The No. 24 Loggers remain perfect in Northwest Conference play (7-1-1, 4-0 NWC) and have run their winning streak to seven: a fantastic feat for a talented group of players. With...

The Puget Sound campus has been echoing with the sound of whistles as of late, heralding the start of the fall sports season. Sweeping the Green: Men’s golf success

There has always been great emphasis placed the varsity sports teams on this campus, however this interest has been focused on just that: teams.  Football, soccer, baseball and volleyball (just to name a few) have been the sports of interest on the Puget Sound campus.  Whether or not that interest is for negative or positive reasons is left to the sports enthusiasts. However, the Puget Sound campus is home to more than just the fast-paced contact sports.  It is also home to a very talented group of individual athletes in...

Keeping motivated and staying strong

We have all been there: making a promise to yourself to eat healthier and get fit. For a while, whether it be a week or a month, you stand firm on your decision.  You go to the gym or go for a run and rather than eat your weight in French fries you substitute them with a side salad. Great right? But how long does it last? When I stopped playing sports on a regular basis I set a goal for myself to stay active and maintain my level of...
