Controversy surrounds choice of Qatar as host of 2022 World Cup

For the first time in history FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) chose Qatar, a small, oil-rich middle-eastern country, to host the 2022 World Cup. This is the first time that a Middle-Eastern country has been chosen to host this event, and it is the smallest country chosen since Uruguay in 1930. Qatar beat out Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States. One problem that Qatar is faced with is being able to cool open-topped stadiums in their extreme desert conditions.  FIFA was worried that these extreme conditions would...

Cross Country finishes middle of the pack

University of Puget Sound’s cross country team had an average season.  They consistently placed in the middle of most of their meets and they weren’t able to meet their goal of finishing in the top half of the conference.  According to coach Mike Orechia, the reason the team had an average season is because “the men’s team was very young.  They made tremendous progress and we are excited about the future.  The women suffered from sickness at the wrong time of the year.” Despite these unfortunate set-backs there were some...

The team did very well in their first game against the alumni ultimate Frisbee team.  Even though they lost 16 – 19, they gave the alumni a run for their money. “Our offensive movement was what we wanted it to be. We definitely played better defense than the...

Featured Athlete: Chris McDonald

A large contributor to the success of the men’s soccer team’s so far this year is sophomore goal keeper Chris McDonald. He has made 33 saves and has only been scored on nine times during the 12 games this year. McDonald is from Newton, Massachusetts and has been playing soccer since he was five years old. He attributes his success as goalie to years of game experience and high-quality goalkeeping coaches. “Our goalkeeper coach, Bobby McLaughlan, has probably helped me the most, and I feel like I’ve made huge strides...

Men’s soccer gets stuck in mud

The men’s soccer team traveled to Parkland, Washington on a rainy and wet Sunday Oct. 10 to play against the Pacific Lutheran Lutes.  This rivalry game ended up being the third loss this year for the men’s soccer team. In the first half, Logger offense was able to manufacture three shots.  None of these shots found the back of the net, leaving the Loggers in a defensive battle for much of the half. The Lute’s offense fired five shots on goal.  Four were deflected by the Logger defense but Giancarlo...
