Welcome to the first issue of The Puget Sound Trail for the 2026-2027 school year! We are so excited to bring you another year of investigative reporting, intriguing community highlights, humorous satirical pieces and more!
As The Trail celebrates 116 years of publication, we’re reflecting on where we’ve come from and where we’re going. Since our return in 2021, we’ve focused on rebuilding our foundation and institutionalizing our internal processes so that each new staff inherits a stronger paper than the one before. Countless staff members have brought us to where we are today, and we’re committed to continuing that growth.
This year we are working to establish The Trail as an essential part of the Puget Sound and Tacoma community. We believe this work matters now more than ever. Student journalism holds our own institution accountable, gives students a voice in campus affairs, and provides us with powerful communication and collaboration skills. We are not just a news outlet. We are a living, breathing team of students working alongside community members to bring you stories that are relevant, accurate and interesting.
We are also thrilled to announce our collaborative news show on K.U.P.S., The Student News Hour, airing on Wednesdays at noon! It can be accessed online to stream at kupsfm.com/trail/. Each week, we cover local and national, and campus-based news. Our host, Anna Dery, does a deep dive on a new segment with special guests, covering everything from the intricacies of daily life to broader stories in our community. Be sure to tune in!
All of our programming would not be possible without our stellar editorial board and staff contributors. If you are interested in contributing your writing, drawing, photographing, or puzzle-making skills, reach out to trail@pugetsound.edu. We’d love to have you join the team! And if you’re not interested in writing the story yourself, but you know a story that could use coverage, consider submitting to our Community News Form available as a QR code on the back page.
Thank you for your loyal support of this vital campus institution. We hope you read this issue cover-to-cover, play the games and chat with your friends about it!
With gratitude,
Sophie Goble & Erin Hurley (Editors-in-Chief of The Puget Sound Trail)
