By STEPHEN HAMWAY   Club sports face an uphill battle for attention from the Puget Sound community, often being overshadowed by larger, better funded programs. However, what Puget Sound’s ultimate Frisbee team has accomplished is simply too exciting to ignore. Puget Sound’s ultimate team will be traveling to Milwaukee, Wis. to take part in the 2013 Division III USA Ultimate College Open Championship, where they will compete against the best teams in Division III from across the country. The ultimate team—nicknamed the Postmen as an allusion to the school’s acronym—has...

Lacrosse loses in playoffs

Men’s lacrosse experienced quite the midseason turnaround to propel themselves to the playoffs. After being left for dead following an 0-4 start, the team turned it around, winning two crucial conference games to sneak into the PNCLL playoffs for the first time in six years. However, their 2-2 record in their division belied their 2-7 overall mark. The team would have to play much better to make any noise in the playoffs, which began on Saturday, April 27 against the University of Portland. The Loggers knew they had their work...

Women’s tennis sees winning streak snapped in final weekend

The Logger women’s tennis team was riding quite a wave of momentum into their final week of the season. The team had not lost in over a month, winning 10 straight matches since their March 8 defeat at the hands of Lewis and Clark. And because of that success, they had played themselves into contention for the Northwest Conference Tournament, a postseason berth going to just the top four schools in the conference. The Loggers entered the weekend slotted comfortably in the third spot in the conference. But it would...

Savage’s grand slam keys upset for the Loggers

While the rest of the campus enjoyed a week-long break, the Loggers men’s baseball team stayed hard at work during spring break, playing seven games. While the team dealt with a setback in the early part of the week, suffering a four-game sweep at the hands of College of Idaho that began on Saturday, March 16 and concluded on Monday, March 18, they went a long way toward redeeming their week with three straight victories over rival Pacific Lutheran. The Loggers took both halves of the doubleheader on Saturday, March...

Men’s tennis comes up short over weekend

It is no secret that Puget Sound men’s tennis has struggled at the outset of their 2013 season. Four straight conference losses to open the season—the last three of which saw the Loggers lose every set—had the team reeling. And so the Loggers began their slate of matches hoping for a different result. The first match of the week came against rival Pacific Lutheran on Wednesday, March 6. Unfortunately, this match was simply more of the same. To their credit, the Loggers fought hard during their doubles matches, as all...

Women’s lacrosse dominates Linfield

Both men’s and women’s lacrosse took the field over the weekend, though they experienced radically different results during their respective games. The intramural men’s team entered the weekend looking for a lift. After having gone winless in their first three games of their season and losing their previous two by a combined score of 38-3, the Loggers were hoping their game at home against College of Idaho on Saturday, March 2 would yield better results. Sadly, it was not to be. Despite four goals from senior Dan Leininger (Colorado Springs,...

Softball team suffers sweep against George Fox

Losers of their first eight games, Puget Sound’s softball team went into their four game set with Northwest Conference rival George Fox looking for anything to stop their frustrating losing streak. The weekend series began on Saturday, March 2 at high noon. As has been their tendency this season, the Loggers fell behind early. George Fox began the bottom of the first inning with a double, a single and a fielding error that allowed the first run of the game to score for the Bruins. Three singles, a steal and...
