Women’s tennis gets off to strong start

The Logger women’s tennis team started off 2013 with a bang in a couple of rousing victories on the road in their first two matches of the new year, as they dealt with both Pacific and George Fox to get off to a 2-0 start in Northwest Conference play. Coming off of an up-and-down season in 2012 in which they finished with a meager 8-9 record overall but ended the season on a tear, winning six of their final seven matches, the Loggers were eager to pick up right where...

Loggers represented at large national tournament

While the rest of the team was swimming for Puget Sound at the Husky Invitational, a couple of Logger swimmers had a unique opportunity. Junior Derek Frenzel (Moscow, Idaho) and senior Tracy Wormwood (Elk River, Minn.) were selected to attend the 2012 AT&T Winter National Championships from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1 in Austin, Texas. The competition was not limited to Division III schools, and included many much larger state schools with well-established swimming programs. Even more exciting, one of the participants in the Winter Championships was Ryan Lochte, of...

Rest in peace: Assistant Athletic Trainer Stana Landon passes away, leaves her legacy on Puget Sound’s athletics

The role of a college athletic trainer is not always a glamorous one, particularly at a small school like Puget Sound. There is a great deal of hard work involved, and very little acclaim from the student body at large. So it is that much more impressive that Assistant Athletic Trainer Stana Landon was able to make such a positive impression on the campus community, and indeed, it is that much more heartbreaking that she is gone. Landon passed away on Thursday, Nov. 22 after a prolonged battle with breast...

Tough tournament for Loggers’ swim team

With the men’s team undefeated and the women’s team sitting at 4-1 on the season, the Loggers’ swim team had every reason to feel confident as they travelled to Southern California to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Nov. 17 and 18. However, their confidence was ultimately for naught, as the schools from Claremont won decisively in both men’s and women’s categories. On the women’s side, the swimmers from the Claremont schools put the Loggers in a hole early, as they controlled both the men’s and women’s 500 relays to set the...

Football’s streak reaches seven games vs. PLU

It is not exactly a secret these days that Puget Sound’s football team is in an extended funk.  Heading into their matchup against cross-town rival Pacific Lutheran, they had lost their first six games of the season. And that six-game losing streak is just a small part of a much larger 15-game losing streak. But for one day, the Loggers had a chance to salvage something from another lost season.  It was Homecoming and Family Weekend at Puget Sound and the football team tried its hardest to put its best...

Logger swimming dominates at meet, looks to build on success

The Puget Sound swim team had their first meet of the season when they traveled to Caldwell, Idaho to take on the College of Idaho Coyotes. Headed into their first meet of the season, the swim team wanted to start their season with a bang on Saturday, Oct. 7. They were able to do just that, thanks to a dominating performance that saw them win 16 of the 22 events in the competition. The Loggers set the tone early, sweeping the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relay. The women’s ‘A’...

Loggers’ comeback falls short against Pioneers

Given that the Loggers have not won a football game since 2010, a losing streak spanning 13 games, it would be easy to write off their matchup against undefeated Lewis and Clark as an automatic loss at the beginning of the Loggers’ conference schedule. Not to mention that the Pioneers’ ever-dangerous no-huddle option offense came into Saturday’s matchup averaging over 30 points per game, and the Loggers’ defense entered the contest having just given up 110 points in their last two games. On the surface, the game on Saturday, Sept....

Logger Spotlight, Sept. edition: Landon Gauthier shines brightly

Every month, The Trail will look at the best of the Puget Sound sports world, and name one athlete who excels both on and off the field in “Logger Spotlight.” This September, that honor goes to junior forward for the Loggers men’s soccer team: Landon Gauthier (Fox Island, Wash.) After starting the season a bit slowly with a tie followed by a loss, men’s soccer has been on fire ever since, winning their last seven games in a row, including four straight in conference play. Gauthier has played a vital...

Soccer Begins Conference Play Strong

Loggers men’s soccer began their conference season on a high note, as they completed a dominating weekend by defeating both George Fox and Pacific University at home. The Loggers had gotten off to a strong start to their 2012 campaign, beginning their season 3-1-1, including three straight victories. However, the team knew that their real challenge would begin once their conference schedule began. They faced their first NWC opponents over the weekend, as they played host to Pacific University and George Fox. Their first game of the weekend came on...
